The CHAPEL OF SAINT GOFAN in Pembrokeshire was built above a natural cave hermitage cell in the 14th century. Gofan is thought to have died in AD 586 but, like many early saints, his life is shrouded in mystery. One legend says that, in order to help him hide from assailants, the living rock of his hermit cave wrapped around him like a womb and a tomb and to this day rib-like marks in the cave wall are said to be the imprint of the saint’s body. Gofan is the Welsh form of the name Gobannus, the name of a Gallic Vulcan.
