Most ancient religions were sacrificial, requiring a gift of a living being to appease or oblige a worshipped spirit (god, goddess) to intercede or refrain. The dearer the victim, the more powerfully it was thought to gain the attention of the spirit. Sometimes this was a burnt offering or an child sacrifice (as with Isaac).
