In 1187 Saladin recaptured Jerusalem and forced the Knights to resort Ptolemais (County of Tripoli, St. John of Acre, why except Order of the Knights of Malta are also called the Order of the Knights Hospitallers), where they remained there for about a century, before forced to abandon permanently the Holy Land and settle in Cyprus.
